The in-service course and its participants

The Certificate of Education (FE) in-service course is situated in a university department of education. It has been running for over twenty years and annually enrols around forty trainees. Participants are usually involved in post-16 education, and may come from FE, and also from new universities, agricultural colleges, the armed forces, nursing and the paramedical professions. The time needed to obtain the qualification is just over a year; attendance is required in the university for eight weeks (June and July) in each of two consecutive years, with supervised teaching practice in the trainee’s own institution during the intervening period. The course is divided into three stages as follows:

Stage One: 8 weeks ‘block release’ for June and July attendance at university
